Great Egret
Great Egret. Seeing a bird like this is particularly magical to a mid-western guy like me. They don't seem to weigh anything. When they take off or land, it's like they have to struggle to stay on earth.
With this, I'm getting close to exhausting the regular visitors to the duck pond. I might circle back around at some point and do invdividual posts on some of the waterfowl varieties I lumped together in previous pictures, like Mallards or Coots. But really, it's time to move on to other areas in the neighborhood. I called this blog El Dorado Birder, so I really ought to get into El Dorado Regional Park and see what there is to see. Plus, I want to get some pictures of the little guys who visit my bird-feeder at home.
Great Egret, taken on iPhone March 14, 2010 around 4:30 p.m. I initially thought this was a Snowy Egret, but the Cornell bird site, All About Birds, set me straight. Snowy Egrets have dark beaks and look, well, snowier.
Too bad there were no white pelicans while you were at the duck pond. I've seen them there before; maybe they're at one of the regional park lakes. They're lots different than the salt-water brown pelicans.
