Western Scrub Jay
Back when we went to the San Diego Wild Animal Park, there was a scrub jay hanging out near some bird exhibits.
I don't want to post pictures of zoo or captive animals, so bald eagles and burrowing owls and California condors (not to mention Isabella, my African Gray) most likely won't be making an appearance. At the time I debated posting pictures I took in the zoo of wild birds I see in the neighborhood, and settled on the idea that it's not too bad as long as I'm forthcoming about the circumstances. But still, I held back posting the scrub jay pictures. I'd seen them in my yard, but not often, and so it seemed like a cheat to use the zoo pics.
Well no longer. Over the weekend a very immature Western Scrub Jay visited my newly-filled-with-peanuts squirrel feeder.
This was during Maxine's birthday party, so I had to shoot through the glass from her bedroom into the backyard to get any pictures at all.
Baby birds are both cute and revolting. Look at how scruffy this little guy looks.
I hope the scrub jays continue to visit us. Along with other corvids, they are considered one of the smartest animals. Not birds, mind you, animals. And, as with a lot of animals we consider smart, scrub jays will interact with people. I searched You Tube and there's some great videos. So let's hope I can get some more pictures as he matures.
