California Quail
We took a day trip with Jen and Scott (my sister-in-law and her husband) to Scott's dad's place in Pinon Hills. They have some horses on a nice spread in the high desert and it was a lot of fun.
While visiting with the horses I saw a big covey of immature and female California Quail pecking and scratching around the front "yard."
When I tried to get closer, they took off at a sprint (making little "peet-peet-peet" sounds) toward the scrub.
Where they hid in some bushes.
Cute little birds, with their top-knots bobbing. But no males, which is unfortunate because they are really pretty spectacular in their full plumage. Maybe next time.
