Black Phoebe
I took my younger brother, nieces, and Maxine over to Rynerson Park ostensibly to "look at the bunnies," but of course, really to check in on the hawk family over there and to try to get a few bird pictures.
We saw this little Black Phoebe sitting on an electric tower as we were heading back to the car.
There are phoebes all over our neighborhood, and I recall first noticing one a block over sitting on a stop sign. I looked it up in one of the field guides when I got home. We don't get any flycatchers to speak of in our yard, though. Not for a lack of bugs. The backyard gets thick with mosquitoes and crane flies, but I think there just isn't enough room for bug-catching birds to maneuver. So I see them when I'm out biking with the dog, or in the park.
Black Phoebe, June 13, 2010, about 5:45 p.m., shot with the Nikon and I can't remember which field guide I first found them in.
